My entire life has been surrounded by people from different cultures. It was always important to my parents that the schools I attended were diverse, as it is a reflection of our country. This has continued into my time at Stanton College Preparatory School, where our diversity is not only acknowledged, but celebrated through clubs like Multicultural Club, Hindu Student Union, African and Caribbean Student Association, and many more.
In going to a school like Stanton, students are able to appreciate lifestyles other than their own. As we learn about other cultures, we begin to see similarities in each other while embracing our differences, and we become closer. Immigration is a key part of the diversity of the United States, but the current political climate has influenced the lives of many immigrants, including some Stanton students. In this issue, Devil’s Advocate addresses the new immigration laws implemented in the U.S., and how they affect Stanton families in the Features story “Effects of the Deportation Policy.”
Learning the experiences of people who are affected by new immigration legislation humanizes their stories. Empathy alone cannot solve the political issues that come with undocumented immigration, but it provides more understanding. Immigrants are a key part of the diversity which is key to the culture of Stanton and the U.S., so their struggles become important to us all.
