Sweetgreen Restaurant Review

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (SCPDA) — Fast-casual favorite Sweetgreen officially made its Northeast Florida debut last month, marking a major milestone for the national chain. According to News4JAX, the restaurant replaced the former Noodles and Company space in St. Johns Town Center. As the chain expands across Florida, it aims to stay true to its brand mission: to pursue quality without sacrificing convenience.

Finding convenient and favorable food options while eating out is quite difficult. Healthy foods often take longer to prepare and are more expensive, while fast food is cheaper but lacking in nutritional quality. According to an article published on March 1, 2023 by Katharina Buchholz from the World Economic Forum, around 50% of Americans desire to choose healthier food options, yet more than one-third of the population frequently consumes fast food. By providing its customers with sustainably-sourced and nourishing food, Sweetgreen attempts to reenvision the world of affordable eating.

A visit to Sweetgreen at St. Johns Town Center provides customers with an elevated fast-food dining experience. The 2560-square-foot location has a clean, minimalistic design, featuring modern wooden furniture and an open atmosphere. This layout guides guests from the front door straight into the culinary experience. Featuring a large food-preparation counter connected to the kitchen, diners can choose to order from the menu or create their own dish. Sweetgreen offers a variety of meals, including bowls, salads, and wraps, as well as appetizers and drinks.

Organic Jasmine Green Tea: 6.2/10

Organic Hibiscus Berry Tea: 5.4/10

The Organic Jasmine Green Tea and the Organic Hibiscus Berry Tea ($2.95) are two cooling refreshments ideal for the warm days on Sweetgreen’s beverage menu. The teas both contain zero grams of added sugar, making them a low-glycemic option compared to other soft drinks. Additionally, neither are made using artificial flavors, colors, or dyes. The Organic Jasmine Green Tea is acidic with a hint of ginger and lemon, while the Organic Hibiscus Berry Tea tastes like cucumbers with a hint of clover. Despite the use of healthy ingredients, both teas seem to fall short in terms of taste. They tasted diluted with water, and lacked some of the natural tea leaf flavor.

Roasted Bacon Brussels: 6.5/10

The Roasted Bacon Brussels ($6.75) combines charred brussel sprouts and roasted bacon, accompanied with a creamy jalapeno ranch-style dressing. At first glance, the appearance of the dish does not look exceptionally appetizing. The brussel sprouts seemed to be unstructured and disheveled, while the bacon looked dry and unseasoned. Although, the dish turned out to taste better than it appeared. The brussel sprouts were perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper, and the outer skin was crunchy and flaky. When paired with the ranch dressing, the brussels were balanced with acidity, creaminess, and the taste of parmesan cheese. However, bacon was too dry and salty, reducing the overall quality of the dish.

Molly’s Double Chick Scoop: 7.5/10

Molly’s Double Chick Scoop ($8.25) is a limited time item made in partnership between Sweetgreen and American chef and food writer Molly Baz. It is a pickle and chicken salad made with Ayoh Dill Pickle Mayo, Baz’s own brand product. Prior to tasting the dish, the container seemed overfilled. The mayo was dripping over the edge of the bowl, and the chicken and pickle appeared to be excessively covered with sauce. Once again, the food proved to taste better than expected. The rich and salty flavors of the sauce paired exceptionally with the chicken pieces. Pickles and dill added sourness and slight bitterness, complementing the savory chicken as well.

Kale Caesar: 7.6/10

The Kale Caesar ($12.95) gives a clean look, featuring a base of kale and romaine with toppings of chicken, parmesan, bread crumbs and caesar dressing. Beyond the visuals, the proportions are fairly off, overloaded with kale and smaller servings of chicken and crisps. The amalgamation of savoriness from the parmesan and chicken, tanginess of the dressing, and crunch of the leaves brings contrasting flavors throughout the dish. With all the components blended together, the dish tastes similar to an ordinary caesar salad.

Harvest Bowl: 8.3/10

The Harvest Bowl ($14.45) integrates a variety of toppings in one dish: grilled chicken, diced apples, assorted nuts, sweet potato slices, wild rice, balsamic vinaigrette, and goat cheese — all placed on a bed of mixed greens. Visually, the bowl features a range of colors and intriguing textures. The acidity of the dressing pairs remarkably with the apples and chicken, while the almonds, sweet potatoes, and thick goat cheese provide a unique blend of creaminess and crunch in every bite. Although the components of the dish mix well together, the bowl overall lacks depth of flavor. The rice is well seasoned, but felt slightly uncooked.

Miso Glazed Salmon: 8.7/10

The Miso Glazed Salmon ($17.75) has a vibrant look to its appearance through toppings such as rice, avocado, cucumbers, red onions, salmon, and a spicy cashew dressing. When taking the first bite, the salmon seems a bit hard, but the flakiness blends in with the softness of the rice. The crispy onions add a crunch to the combination while the red onions add tanginess. The dish is balanced between the various textures and flavors of each component. The overall taste of the dish is comparable to salmon sushi.

Ultimately, Sweetgreen successfully bridges the gap between nutrition and convenience, offering Jacksonville diners a healthy alternative to traditional fast food. While certain items like the beverages and side dishes experience minor flaws, most of the menu delivers fresh ingredients and satisfying, wholesome flavors. For anyone looking to prioritize their wellness without entirely sacrificing a tasty dining experience, Sweetgreen proves to be a beneficial addition to the St. John’s Town Center.
